Homemade Pizza Dough

Pizza is a firm favourite in our household. It has been for many years. In our early days when Hubby and myself first lived together and we were going through the ‘right of passage’ stage of being stone cold broke each month, homemade pizza was our luxury dinner. Admittedly I could have made it with cheaper toppings but why not have the pizza you want to have? It is pizza after all!

One of the things I insisted on perfecting was my own pizza dough. After 8 years of making this I think I now I have it down to an art. Unfortunately I am no good at hand stretched bases but we can’t be good at everything.

For my pizza base I used an enriched pizza dough which means it contains eggs. There are plenty of other recipes available that don’t use egg but I have never actually tried them as this has always worked so well.

Homemade Pizza Dough

Serves 4

Ingredients

  • 225g Strong White Flour
  • 90-120 mls Hand Warm Water
  • 1 Large Egg, beaten
  • 7g Sachet of Easy Bake Yeast
  • Pinch of Salt
  • Pinch of Sugar
  • Olive Oil

Instructions

  1. Place the flour, yeast, sugar, salt and beaten egg in a bowl. If you are not using an stand mixer then create a well in the flour to put the egg into before mixing together. If using a stand mixer then mix with the dough hook attachment on a medium speed.
  2. Add a little of the water at a time until a smooth dough forms. Turn the mixer up to a high speed to help the dough all come together. The sides of the bowl should be clean. You may not need all of the water.
  3. You can continue to mis in the stand mixer for 10 minutes but I find you get a better knead by hand.
  4. Put the dough onto a well floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes or until the dough is smooth and a little elastic.
  5. Placed the kneaded dough into an oiled bowl and cover with clingfilm or a damp towel and leave to rise for 1 hour in a cool dark place. Nowhere too warm or you will start the cooking process in the yeast too early.
  6. Once risen remove the dough from the bowl onto the floured surface.
  7. Preheat the oven to 220degrees C
  8. Knead for a further 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  9. Half the dough.
  10. Roll each half out as thin or thick as you like. I make mine pretty thin as it puffs up nicely within the over.
  11. Cover with your toppings of choice.
  12. Bake for 10-15 minutes until golden and crispy on the edges and cooked and piping hot in the middle.

I use Buffalo mozzarella on my pizzas. It is a little more expensive but I find the tasty and creamy texture of it so worth it. We also have green peppers and various deli meats including pepperoni and Palma ham. Once the pizza is out of the oven I add a few leaves of basil.

Delicious!!

I know I can never learn to create an evenly rounded pizza dough, but somehow the unevenness gives of the pizza makes it look more homemade and not commercialized. Oh and I love basil on my pizza too! Thanks for sharing this awesome post.

A little unevenness is much more pleasing, I agree!
