My Netflix Recommendations (Season 1)

Netflix recommendations What I have been watching on netflix and would recommend. Part 1.

This is a little different from my usual type of posts but  I have been thinking of sharing my Netflix recommendations for a while.  In fact I have been thinking about it for so long I think I am going to have to write it in a few parts as I have watched so many shows on Netflix.  In essence this is a ‘what I have been watching’ post and it does contain a few spoilers but hopefully not too many.  But consider yourself warned.

Over the years I have watched a lot of TV. When I first worked in restaurants I found I missed a lot of the big hype shows like 24 because they were broadcast when I was at work. With the availability of on demand viewing and the choice to ‘binge watch’ at my own leisure my viewing experience has been revolutionised . I used to love reading books but the reality of parenthood means I don’t have the time anymore and when I do sit down to read I find myself drifting off after two pages.  Therefore Netflix has been a sanity saver.

After Trixie was born and up in the night every hour (or more), Netflix helped me stay awake. It gave me something else to think about other than how tired I was.

The shows I have selected are in no particular order.  These are simply the ones that first sprang to mind as I was writing.

My Netflix Recommendations

Prison Break

Granted the plot is given away in the title so don’t be expecting a story about kittens.  Someone is framed for a crime and imprisoned. His highly intelligent brother, the strong silent type, vows to break him out… and spoiler… he does!

I was unconvinced about watching this as it had been on years before and was one of those programs I missed because of work. This is now one of my favourites.  The only real down side was season 3 was pretty weak and unnecessary.  Season 5 has been confirmed and filmed. Suffice to say I will be one of the first to binge watch it when it comes out in the UK.

House of Cards

This is a must watch. If you haven’t seen it then why on earth not? Kevin Spacey plays a very ambitious congressman who works his up the White House.  His performance is second to none. Spacey draws you in and you find yourself routing for a man you don’t actually like. Who is completely unlikable to be honest.  But watch out for his wife, Claire, played by Robin Wright, she is force to be reckoned with.  I don’t know anything about how American politics works so it took a while to understand some of it. Now I have a pretty good understanding and it has certainly taught me a lot which I didn’t expect.  Each season is released in the Spring so at the beginning of each new year I get excited and keep an eye out for updates.

American Horror Story

I admit this isn’t for everyone.  Truth is I didn’t think this would even be for me but now this is my favourite. I was on the look out for a new series and this came highly recommended so I plucked up the courage and started watching.  After the first episode I was hooked.  I was freaked out, but I was hooked.

Currently there are 6 seasons but only 5 of them are on Netflix.  You don’t need to watch each season in order as they are all different.  However it is important to note that all the cast is the same but play different characters in each season and all seasons are connected somehow but this isn’t immediately obvious.

Season 1

The Murder House which pretty much does what it says. No one comes out alive or unscathed.  Am I the only one that knew Violet was dead? Oh sorry… Bit of a spoiler.

Season 2

Set in a Catholic asylum. This was the hardest one to watch for me, it really creeped me out! It was also the most eclectic season with aliens, psychiatric patients, demon possession and a Nazi doctor (to name a few).  Somehow it worked though.

Season 3

This was about a witches coven. It is the easiest one to watch for me, being a 90’s child the idea of a witches coven isn’t really scary thanks to past shows like Charmed.  This was my favourite season for a while. Of course this is a lot darker with a lot more gore. I will admit some of the Voodoo scenes were a bit much for me.

Season 4

The Freak Show. There was a clown in it. That was enough for me thank you very much! I watched it all though, but I still don’t like clowns.

Season 5

Simply labeled Hotel. I really didn’t know what to expect from this one but it turns out Vampires and lots of blood. Also, the original hotel owner is based on H. H. Holmes who built his own deadly hotel in Chicago. This is a character I was already familiar with and I love how they bought him to life in this season.

I can’t wait for more seasons of this one. I have seen season 6 but as it isn’t available on Netflix yet I won’t ruin it.

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life

I thought it would be a good idea to follow AHS with a much lighter option.  Gilmore Girls has always been one of my favourite programs. To be honest I have lost count the amount of times I have watched it from beginning to end.  When I found out they were doing a new series I did a little dance!

For any Gilmore fans this won’t disappoint.  It has all the fast talking coffee drinking you would expect.  The writer and producer Amy Sherman-Palladino didn’t work on the final season, season 7, so this didn’t end how she had planned.  In her interviews whilst promoting this latest instalment she claims she knew what the final 3 words of the show would be from the moment it started.  I was so intrigued, what would these words be and who would say them? Well I was not disappointed! Shocked, but not disappointed.  As a fan, the more I thought about it, I feel everything finally fell into the place it was always meant to be.

 Orphan Black

I put off watching this one for quite a while, there were other shows higher up my watch list.  What a mistake that was.  This show is amazing. I wasn’t sure what to expect and the synopsis was teasingly vague.  I was hooked quickly.  The main actress, Tatiana Maslany, deserves a medal.  She plays so many different characters and they are so well rounded it is easy to assume there are genuinely more of her.  I don’t want to ruin this for anyone who hasn’t seen it but just when you think you know what is going on another twist in the tale appears out of nowhere.

I’m going to leave this post here, with those 5 as the first instalment of what I have been watching on Netflix.  This is only a drop in the Netflix ocean as far as my viewing goes so I will soon be back with another post.  Of course now I get to claim my Netflix addiction is blog research, win win!

The Pramshed
This Mum's Life
3 Little Buttons

  1. I love a good Netflix recommendation lol! we just finished season two of suits and I really liked that. I watched season one of house of cards but just found it so slow and complicated (Suits was a bit like this at first tbh). prison break s1 and 2 were good but yes, 3 was a bit pants.
other things we loved on Netflix – Stranger Things and Making a Murderer.
I find the Guardian really good for round ups of streaming services. that’s where I found out about stranger things. it’s huge now!
Master of None is funny and I love love love Orange is the New Black ! #bigpinlink

    1. Yeah suits is good. Stranger things and making a murderer will be on one of my future roundups, they are amazing! I haven’t seen master of none. I like OITNB but I have lost momentum with it a bit… hoping the next season will rekindle my flare.

  2. YESSS! YES! American horror story and house of cards are my all time fav! Next season of HOC is coming out soon! I am going to watch the whole thing in like two days max! #bigpinklink

  3. Watched/watch them all apart from House of Cards. I hope to be able to watch that one day. At the moment I’m going through every episode of Modern Family on NowTV.

    1. It is really good, takes a while to get your head around the American politics if you aren’t used to it. I have Modern Family on my watch list. I saw the first couple of seasons when it was first out.

  4. This is really good! I never seem to have the time to watch television anymore but I probably should! I love Gossip Girl and I’m currently trying to work my way through Pretty Little Liars!

    1. Ah I loved Pretty Little Liars, I am sure that will feature on one of my round ups in the future. I haven’t seen Gossip Girl yet.

  5. Perfect timing, I need a new Netflix season to get hooked on. I started House of Cards and struggled through the first episode, but I will definitely try Orphan Black… *reaches for remote*

    1. I have recommended it to a few people I know. It is scary, I won’t lie but there is something about it that makes you want to know more about the story. You want to keep going through it scare. I think it is my favourite one of all, I’m tempted to restart it x

  6. Great post. I was so excited when the new Gilmore girls came out too and watched them all at once, definitely did not disappoint. My husband and I were really hooked on house of cards but we kinda stopped watching the last season after an episode or two as it felt it didn’t really have anywhere else to go, may have to revisit this and give it another chance now!
I often thought about watching prison break too but never seemed to get round to it. #dreamteam

    1. I recommend getting round to Prison Break, I was surprised by it. Go back to house of cards. It gets very interesting. I don’t think I ruin it by saying because he inherited the presidency mid-term it isn’t going to be his for long…. So what will happen next? What will he do to retain it? 😉

  7. I am a massive Prison Break fan! Or at least I thought I was – but I didn’t know there was a 5th series?? Without giving anything away… the mind boggles!!?? Quite fancying House of Cards and also American Horror Story. I went right off all things gory and scary after having the kids but The Walking Dead has kind of lured me back in! Thanks for this – and for linking up! #DreamTeam x

    1. I know how exciting! I can’t wait, I hope it doesn’t disappoint. I haven’t watched walking dead yet but I have seen some clips and I think it is tamer than AMH but is certainly enough to get you back into the swing of gore. If you have seen Dexter (watch this space review coming soon) then you will be fine.

  8. I LOVE the Gilmore Girls, I grew up watching them and when I found it on netflix watched the whole lot in time for the new ones. Now I’m watching it again! I also loved American Horror story Asylum. It was too believable in parts. I’m addicted to How to Get Away with Murder at the moment. Makes ironing very exciting!

    1. I know, Asylum really creeped me out…. I had that music as my ringtone for a while though, there was something so addictive about it! I want to watch Gilmore Girls again. I think I may start it soon. I loved How to get away with Murder. I can’t wait for more.

  9. I love Gilmore Girls and just starting to get into Orphan Black, sounds like it’s interesting Im only on episode 2. At first I was a bit like this is weird, but I could see getting into it. Netflix is my fave!!! Haha thanks for the recommendations and sharing with #StayClassyMama!

  10. I heart Netflix.

Spoiler alert….AHS Season 6 is horrible. You’ll hate it. It was their worst season by far. Sigh.

Everyone keeps telling me to check out Prison Break. Dexter and Breaking Bad were the two best finds on Netflix for me.

    1. I have actually seen season 6, I caught it on boring normal TV 😉 It was very odd even by AHS standards. I felt it started so well and then drifted! Dexter is awesome! I’m going to put that in my next round up. Of course Breaking Bad can’t go without mention, that was brilliant. By the sounds of it you would really like Prison Break. Although by its nature it is less intense than these other shows, or at least less blood filled.

  11. Oh I love Gilmore Girls, Prison Break and AHS. I binge watched all of Gilmore girls in time for the new epsiodes, it took me just over 2 months to watch from beginning to end!! I definitely watch too much tv.x #dreamteam

  12. So I’ve seen Prison Break and Gilmore Girls, debated AHS a number of times and now feeling that it needs to go on my ‘to watch’ list. House of Cards is one I’m always hearing being batted around so maybe I should give that a try too. Can’t say I’d hear of Orphan Black but it sounds thoroughly interesting. Can’t wait to see what your next suggestions are!! Thank you for sharing with #bigpinklink x

    1. Orphan Black is well worth trying. I love AHS, quite addicted to sitting behind the sofa peaking out now 😉
