This is a little different from my usual type of posts but I have been thinking of sharing my Netflix recommendations for a while. In fact I have been thinking about it for so long I think I am going to have to write it in a few parts as I have watched so many shows on Netflix. In essence this is a ‘what I have been watching’ post and it does contain a few spoilers but hopefully not too many. But consider yourself warned.
Over the years I have watched a lot of TV. When I first worked in restaurants I found I missed a lot of the big hype shows like 24 because they were broadcast when I was at work. With the availability of on demand viewing and the choice to ‘binge watch’ at my own leisure my viewing experience has been revolutionised . I used to love reading books but the reality of parenthood means I don’t have the time anymore and when I do sit down to read I find myself drifting off after two pages. Therefore Netflix has been a sanity saver.
After Trixie was born and up in the night every hour (or more), Netflix helped me stay awake. It gave me something else to think about other than how tired I was.
The shows I have selected are in no particular order. These are simply the ones that first sprang to mind as I was writing.
My Netflix Recommendations
Granted the plot is given away in the title so don’t be expecting a story about kittens. Someone is framed for a crime and imprisoned. His highly intelligent brother, the strong silent type, vows to break him out… and spoiler… he does!
I was unconvinced about watching this as it had been on years before and was one of those programs I missed because of work. This is now one of my favourites. The only real down side was season 3 was pretty weak and unnecessary. Season 5 has been confirmed and filmed. Suffice to say I will be one of the first to binge watch it when it comes out in the UK.
House of Cards
This is a must watch. If you haven’t seen it then why on earth not? Kevin Spacey plays a very ambitious congressman who works his up the White House. His performance is second to none. Spacey draws you in and you find yourself routing for a man you don’t actually like. Who is completely unlikable to be honest. But watch out for his wife, Claire, played by Robin Wright, she is force to be reckoned with. I don’t know anything about how American politics works so it took a while to understand some of it. Now I have a pretty good understanding and it has certainly taught me a lot which I didn’t expect. Each season is released in the Spring so at the beginning of each new year I get excited and keep an eye out for updates.
American Horror Story
I admit this isn’t for everyone. Truth is I didn’t think this would even be for me but now this is my favourite. I was on the look out for a new series and this came highly recommended so I plucked up the courage and started watching. After the first episode I was hooked. I was freaked out, but I was hooked.
Currently there are 6 seasons but only 5 of them are on Netflix. You don’t need to watch each season in order as they are all different. However it is important to note that all the cast is the same but play different characters in each season and all seasons are connected somehow but this isn’t immediately obvious.
The Murder House which pretty much does what it says. No one comes out alive or unscathed. Am I the only one that knew Violet was dead? Oh sorry… Bit of a spoiler.
Set in a Catholic asylum. This was the hardest one to watch for me, it really creeped me out! It was also the most eclectic season with aliens, psychiatric patients, demon possession and a Nazi doctor (to name a few). Somehow it worked though.
This was about a witches coven. It is the easiest one to watch for me, being a 90’s child the idea of a witches coven isn’t really scary thanks to past shows like Charmed. This was my favourite season for a while. Of course this is a lot darker with a lot more gore. I will admit some of the Voodoo scenes were a bit much for me.
The Freak Show. There was a clown in it. That was enough for me thank you very much! I watched it all though, but I still don’t like clowns.
Simply labeled Hotel. I really didn’t know what to expect from this one but it turns out Vampires and lots of blood. Also, the original hotel owner is based on H. H. Holmes who built his own deadly hotel in Chicago. This is a character I was already familiar with and I love how they bought him to life in this season.
I can’t wait for more seasons of this one. I have seen season 6 but as it isn’t available on Netflix yet I won’t ruin it.
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life
I thought it would be a good idea to follow AHS with a much lighter option. Gilmore Girls has always been one of my favourite programs. To be honest I have lost count the amount of times I have watched it from beginning to end. When I found out they were doing a new series I did a little dance!
For any Gilmore fans this won’t disappoint. It has all the fast talking coffee drinking you would expect. The writer and producer Amy Sherman-Palladino didn’t work on the final season, season 7, so this didn’t end how she had planned. In her interviews whilst promoting this latest instalment she claims she knew what the final 3 words of the show would be from the moment it started. I was so intrigued, what would these words be and who would say them? Well I was not disappointed! Shocked, but not disappointed. As a fan, the more I thought about it, I feel everything finally fell into the place it was always meant to be.
I put off watching this one for quite a while, there were other shows higher up my watch list. What a mistake that was. This show is amazing. I wasn’t sure what to expect and the synopsis was teasingly vague. I was hooked quickly. The main actress, Tatiana Maslany, deserves a medal. She plays so many different characters and they are so well rounded it is easy to assume there are genuinely more of her. I don’t want to ruin this for anyone who hasn’t seen it but just when you think you know what is going on another twist in the tale appears out of nowhere.
I’m going to leave this post here, with those 5 as the first instalment of what I have been watching on Netflix. This is only a drop in the Netflix ocean as far as my viewing goes so I will soon be back with another post. Of course now I get to claim my Netflix addiction is blog research, win win!
